STARTER PUPPIES

Not everyone wants a young puppy just after weaning. Some families would rather have a puppy that is housebroken and started obedience training. We call these puppies "starter puppies." These puppies go to their forever homes after 16 weeks of age after housebreaking and starting basic obedience training. A starter puppy has already “started” basic dog training, saving their new family precious time.

At Desert Winds Labradoodles we begin some training of puppies before they are weaned and placed for adoption at 8.5 weeks of age. Included with the price of a pet puppy is this training which consists of beginning socialization, paper training, dog door training and crate training.

For starter puppies that stay with us until 16 weeks of age, our professional trainer begins leash training the puppy, and assists us in housebreaking the puppy.  The trainer also begins teaching the basic obedience commands: come, stay, sit, down and heal, as well as off and leave it. Any behavior modification is worked on as well, if needed, socialization is continued, and for an additional $250, puppies can be taught to swim upon request (this option is seasonal only.)  Starter puppies will have all of their puppy shots completed, and have multiple experiences on the grooming table. If the adopting family chooses for the puppy to go through training before taking them home, they can request a "starter puppy".

Since every puppy learns at a different rate, and because once they have learned  to obey one human companion and then go to live with another, we cannot guarantee that the puppy will have all learning completed, and will not have a period of adjustment in their new home which may include some temporary regression of training. This is where the term, “starter” puppy comes from. Training has been started, and the new owner continues the training once they adopt the puppy.

The price of a starter puppy is $4,500.00 (plus shipping, if applicable and/or PayPal fees) to cover the following additional expenses which include 8 additional weeks of feeding, puppy shots with veterinarian expenses, purchase of larger and more expensive crates, and the cost of the private training lessons by our professional trainer, Meagan Townsend.

SPECIAL NEEDS

If you have a special need or desire for your puppy to be trained as a service, therapy, or assistance dog, basic obedience training is usually required before dogs enter specialized training.  A starter puppy can be a good start to your training. We are not currently training for special needs at this time.
OUR STARTER PUPPY PROGRAM WAS SUSPENDED AS OF 01/01/16 UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
